Tutoring Services

The goal of the tutoring program is to provide the resources whereby students can strengthen their knowledge and understanding of college curricula and to promote within students the processes of active learning, independence, and motivation.

Free tutoring is provided to currently enrolled students for selected content areas on all campuses. Subject areas may vary by semester and campus. Tutoring schedules are available each semester on all campuses or by clicking on Tutoring Schedules.

The tutoring staff includes peer tutors – fellow students who must meet certain qualifications and participate in an extensive training session – and adjunct faculty.

How do I know if I need a tutor?

The time to seek assistance from a tutor is the minute you realize you need help. If you’re still not sure, ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I falling behind in class?
  • Am I having trouble with homework assignments?
  • Have I done as well on tests as I should?
  • Do I have difficulty writing a paper?
  • If you answered yes to even one question, you should visit the tutoring and/or writing centers soon.

How will tutors help me?

Every tutor is qualified to help in his/her subject area but will not know everything there is to know in the area. If a tutor doesn’t know something he/she should be willing to find someone who can help you. Tutors will work with you to help you understand the subject. They will serve as a guide, but they will not do your work for you.

You are expected to come prepared to the tutoring center. That includes bringing your textbook, class notes, and any other materials that will assist your tutor in understanding the class assignment.

Since tutoring is provided on a walk-in basis, it is quite possible that you will be sharing a tutor with other students. Appointments are recommended, but not required, for the writing center.
