Transferring Credit

Please note that the information below is drawn from the 2007-2008 Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) catalog, pages 14 and 46.

Pre-Baccalaureate/Transfer Program

BCTC provides course work that is transferable to the University of Kentucky and other four-year institutions. The pre-baccalaureate program is generally equivalent to the first
two years of the curriculum leading to the bachelor’s degree. Some students, however, spend less than two years in the community college pre-baccalaureate program and others may spend considerably more time. Students are advised to consult with an advisor with regard to the optimum length of time they should stay in a community college.

Students who expect to complete requirements for the Bachelor’s degree should consult the curriculum recommended in the catalog of the institution to which they plan to transfer and/or contact the Transfer Information Specialist in 203 Oswald Building on the Cooper campus. Such students should consult with their academic advisors to plan appropriate course work for transfer purposes.

Another great resource for BCTC students wanting to transfer to a four-year institution is the Transfer Center, located in 100B of the Academic Technical Building on the Cooper campus. They would be able to instruct you as to some of the transfer agreements that exist between BCTC and many four-year institutions.

In January 1996, the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (formerly the Council on Higher Education) implemented a new statewide transfer policy designed to improve the transferability of general education course work among public colleges and universities. To find out more information, please review the transfer requirements on pages 44-45 of the 2006-2007 BCTC Catalog.

Advising Note for Students Planning to Transfer to a Public University in Kentucky

Under the Council on Postsecondary Education’s General Education Transfer Policy, students who complete all or parts of the Associate in Arts or the Associate in Science degree requirements listed previously will be able to transfer blocks of general education credit under the following conditions.

Fully Certified

Students must complete a general education program of 48 semester hours, including the 33 credit hour Core Transfer Component; receive an approved AA or AS transfer degree or earn 60 hours of undergraduate credit; and hold a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher. You will need to earn additional general education credits if the receiving institution's general education program requires more than 48 hours.

Core Component Certified

Students must be in good academic standing, and complete the Core Transfer Component. You will need to fulfill the remaining general education requirements of the receiving institution if not satisfied through the Core Transfer Component. The Core Transfer Component Certification consists of a total of 33 credit hours in five academic categories:

  • Communications -- 9 hours, 6 in written communication and 3 in oral
  • Humanities -- 6 hours (e.g., fine arts, philosophy, history, foreign language)
  • Behavioral/Social Sciences -- 9 hours (e.g., psychology, sociology, economics)
  • Natural Sciences -- 6 hours (e.g., biology, physics, geology)
  • Mathematics -- 3 hours, which must include, at a minimum, college algebra

Category Certified

Complete one or more of the five categories in the 33 credit hour Core Transfer Component. You must fulfill all the remaining general education requirements of the receiving institution.

Special Advising Note for University of Kentucky Transfers

Students transferring to the University of Kentucky are advised:

  1. that they must meet the UK Foreign Language requirement. This requirement can be satisfied through completing two years of foreign language in high school or by completing any two-semester sequence (at least six hours) in a single foreign language in college.
  2. that they must complete a cross-cultural course.
  3. that UK has established a Graduation Writing Requirement (pg. 35). Students who are General Education certified who transfer to UK will have to fulfill this additional requirement. Please see the UK Bulletin for more information.

Students are also advised that UK has an Inference-Logic requirement (any calculus course or STA 200 plus PHI 120 or PHI 320) which must be completed before graduation.
