International Students

If you are a non-resident alien and/or are on a temporary United States visa, you would be considered an international applicant.  (Please note that the Student Exchange and Visitor Information System (SEVIS) regulations prohibit International students from applying for Spring II or Fall II terms.)  If you have questions about the international application process, please contact us at 1.866.774.4872, Ext. 56437.

International applicants must submit the following information before the international student deadline:

  • an application for admission.  The application for admission can be printed off the web or submitted online at www.bluegrass.kctcs.edu/sa/admissions/application_for_admission/,;
  • copies of your current visa and immigration documents if you are currently inside of the United States;
  • official scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or proof of completion of the fifth level of the University of Kentucky (UK) English as a Second Language Program; or an official transcript showing grades of A or B in English 101 and 102 (or equivalents) at an accredited American college; or a college in another country where English is the native language;
  • a current financial or bank statement in English from the applicant's bank showing that the applicant has the necessary funds for the school year; and
  • an official document in English which verifies the applicant's completion of the secondary level of education.

TOEFL Information

The score from the TOEFL exam must be at least 500 paper-based or 173 computer-based and the results must not be more than eighteen months old at the time of initial enrollment. The TOEFL code for Bluegrass Community and Technical College is 1474.

After arriving on campus:

Soon after arrival, international applicants must schedule an appointment with the University Health Service to complete a health history, and a record of immunizations. Please be advised that Bluegrass Community and Technical College has instituted a mandatory health insurance plan for international students. International students will be charged for the UK Student Health Insurance Plan along with their tuition and fees. The cost for the UK Student Health Insurance Plan is currently $645.00 per year, however fees may increase beginning in the fall 2007 term. Students who have already enrolled in a health insurance plan that meets the Bluegrass Community and Technical College requirements may apply for a waiver of participation in the UK Student Health Insurance Plan.

International Student Immigration Reminders

Arrival Information:

  • Bring your stamped Student I-20, passport with valid visa stamped inside, and letter of admission to Bluegrass Community and Technical College to Mr. Wendell Sparks, International Student Services Coordinator, room 211 Oswald Building immediately upon arrival.
  • Freshman should schedule the mandatory placement test (COMPASS) by contacting the Advising & Assessment Center at 859.246.6220 to register for classes and to have a student identification (ID) card made.
  • Schedule an appointment at the University Health Service to complete a health history, and a record of immunizations.

To Remain in "Lawful Status," Students Must:

  • Keep passports valid.
  • Enroll in school on a full-time basis except during the last semester of study before graduation. Dropping below a full-time course load constitutes a violation of student status. A full-time course load consists of a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester.
  •  Refrain from accepting employment off campus without authorization.
  • Refrain from working more than 20 hours per week, except during school recesses.
  • Keep I-20 or DS-2019 current and apply for extension before expiration date of completion of studies.

Immigration Reminders:

  • Apply for an extension of stay before the expiration date of completion of studies.
  • Before traveling outside the United States, have your I-20 endorsed by Mr. Wendell Sparks in 211 Oswald Building. (Please allow at least two business days for the processing of the I-20.)
  • Optional Practical Training (OPT) for F-1 Students: Within specific guidelines, F-1 students may apply for employment authorization for up to 12 months of OPT directly related to their major area of study. Instructions and forms may be obtained in the Office of Admissions (please schedule an appointment). Students may apply for this benefit three months before completion of requirements for the degree. The average time of processing with immigration is two months.
