Beginning Freshman

If you have no previous college coursework, you would be considered a freshman or a first-time college student.  Bluegrass Community and Technical College accepts all applicants who are high school graduates or GED recipients who have not attended any other college or university as beginning freshmen.

Freshman applicants must submit the following information:

  • an application for admission.  The application for admission can be printed off the web or submitted online at www.bluegrass.kctcs.edu/sa/admissions/application_for_admission/;
  • an official high school transcript (showing the date of graduation) OR official passing GED scores;
  • official American College Test (ACT) or Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) scores are NO LONGER REQUIRED for general admission into BCTC, but they are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED.   These scores can be used to bypass COMPASS testing, can be crucial in obtaining KEES money, and are still required for some Selective Health programs. Students applying for any health program should visit the Health Admissions web page, or for the official version of these requirements, should follow the "Guidelines for Selective Admission Programs" starting on page 94 of the 2007-2008 BCTC Catalog.

The American College Test (ACT)

The official American College Test (ACT) is administered on five test dates each year in the United States, and it is also administered in a number of foreign countries. For information on the ACT exam, contact your local high school, or the ACT Test Administration at www.actstudent.org.

Computerized Placement Assessment & Support Services System (COMPASS) Test

After your file is processed for admission, you will receive a packet of information in the mail which will direct you as to setting up an advising appointment with the Advising and Assessment Office, scheduling your classes, signing up for mandatory freshman orientation, and taking the COMPASS test, if necessary.

The COMPASS test is used to determine placement of students in the subjects of English, reading and math.  All beginning freshmen are required to participate in BCTC's assessment and advising program and may be required (depending on ACT scores and subjects the student is requesting) to schedule and take the COMPASS test in order to be placed in the appropriate level of those three areas.  Testing must be completed prior to the first day of classes. On the day you are scheduled for the COMPASS test, you are also advised on which classes to take based on your major. Prior to the advising/testing date, you must attend a mandatory freshmen orientation.

Information about scheduling an orientation, COMPASS test and advising session will be included in admissions letters or can be obtained by calling the Assessment and Advising Center at 859.246.6220.
