Employment Opportunities

Homeland security offers numerous employment opportunities not only at the federal, state and local levels of government, but also at other public and

private organizations. In addition, one might want to use one or more of the following options as part of their professional development plan. Please note that the three options are not exclusive; in other words, one might study under one option and be able to obtain employment under another division in this program.

The Criminal Justice option provides the principles, theory, and techniques employed by criminal justice agencies and police units. If the student is interested in the Criminal Justice option, then he or she might pursue positions such as a

correctional officer, jail auditor, offender records specialist, police officer, or probation and parole officer. Other related employment opportunities would include but not be limited to, positions within the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

For those individuals who are interested in the Fire Science option, this degree choice includes fire behavior, fire department organization, firefighter safety, personal protective equipment, and portable fire

extinguishers along with fire appliances, hoses, and streams. Positions may be found involving careers such as firemen, forest fire fighters, fire inspectors, and fire prevention specialists.

In regards to the Security Management option, the student will receive a comprehensive overview of physical security policies, procedures, and techniques of the profession. Topics covered are access control, acts of violence, contingency planning, CCTV, intrusion detection, and perimeter protection as well as security design and surveys. Upon the completion of this course of study, one might find employment in such areas as a detective hired by a private firm, police officers, private security officers, protective services workers, recreation protection services, and transit or railroad police. Other possible employment may be found with organizations such as the Central Intelligence Agency, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Transportation along with state and local government-basedentities.
