STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITIES
As a distance learning student, you are responsible for the following:
- Arranging for a proctor for each proctored exam (Proctor must be approved by instructor).
- Providing personal identification to the proctor before taking an exam.
- Leaving purses, backpacks, hats, cell phones, and notebooks (unless approved) outside the testing area or out of reach during exam.
- Child care and other personal matters are taken care of beforehand.
- Taking blank paper and writing tools to the exam in case they are needed (proctors are not expected to provide paper or pens/pencils).
- Following the guidelines provided in the course guide or syllabus or in directions for other special requirements (such as Writing Portfolio).
- Take exams at the proctor’s place of business unless other arrangements have been made.
- Some proctors may charge a fee to proctor an exam. Students are responsible for paying for any exam proctoring charges, and should discuss payment options directly with the proctor.
CRITERIA FOR PROCTOR SELECTION OUTSIDE OF KCTCS
- Proctors outside of KCTCS must be acting in an official capacity at their place of business in one of the following positions: (Proctor must be approved by instructor)
- Dean, Associate Dean, Assistant Dean, department/program chairperson, or registrar of a college or university
- Librarian (city, county, school, etc.)
- Professional staff member of the adult or continuing education office, counseling center, or testing center at a college or university
- Public or private school superintendent, principal, or counselor
- Civil Service examiner
- Judge of a court of law
- United States Armed Forces Educational Services Officer
- Human resources director or employee development coordinator
- Teachers and professors (other than those listed as KCTCS Proctors) may NOT serve as proctors unless they are acting in one of the capacities listed above.
- Relatives may NOT serve as proctors, no matter what their positions.
WORKING WITH PROCTORS OUTSIDE OF KCTCS
- Ask an acceptable proctor if he or she will be willing and able to proctor an exam—do not assume a proctor will be willing or able to proctor all of your exams just because he or she may have done so before.
- Be sure to ask if they charge for proctoring exams.
- Request an Internet connected computer for Online Exams.
- At least two weeks prior to the proposed exam date, submit the proctor's name, title, department, place of business, and email address to the instructor.
- The exam will be located within your online class but will be password protected.
- Communicate with the proctor to confirm a mutually-convenient exam time in the proctor's official place of business when you have received notification that the exam information has been sent to the proctor.
- Password for the exam will be sent to the Proctor. Proctor will enter password for student through the Course Management System (Angel, Blackboard, WebCT, etc.) Exam will be submitted directly to the instructor through the CMS.
PROCTOR’S RESPONSIBILITES
To supervise an exam as a proctor, the person acting in an official capacity (as listed above) must be willing to execute the following duties:
- Be available during the entire exam appointment.
- Secure the exam information until the exam appointment.
- Provide a quiet area with a computer and network connection.
- Identify the student by photo ID if not known personally.
- Make sure what the test allows (calculator, notes, text, and disability accommodation).
- Before beginning an exam, check to be sure that the exam given is the correct one.
