Visit us at www.uky.edu/housing for an entire list of FAQ's about living on campus---it's the smart choice! Off-campus housing – Most will need to live off-campus in private owned housing. You should allow a few days to find an apartment after you arrive. Many students do find off-campus apartments within 20 – 30 minutes walking distance. It may take considerable time, effort , and patience on your part to find a suitable place. By living off campus, you may prepare your own food and live with others perhaps from your own culture. However, it may be a little difficult to buy and carry groceries, cook, and pay utility bills while at the same time learning to study in a very new environment. Most housing is rented on a contract or lease basis. The lease is a legal document giving the terms of the rental agreement. A security deposit, normally equal to the first month’s rent is required when you sign. It will be returned by the landlord, minus any damage or cleaning charges, at the end of the contract. Usually it will not be returned if you break the contract (i.e. moving before the end of the contract).
