MIT Program Advising Information

Because electricity plays such a vital role in modern industry, Electrical Circuit Theory is the “gate way” course to many of the higher level classes in the MIT Programs.  To understand Circuit Theory you have to be comfortable with Mathematics.

The Program Math Requirement can be completed by taking MT 125, MT 150 or MA 109.  Most students chose to take MT 125.  In order to take DC Circuits (ENGT 110) you must be in MT 125.

How do you know your math level?  There are two ways for us to tell which math class you need to start with: ACT scores or COMPASS scores. Many students took the ACT or SAT tests while in college.  If you took the test recently enough we can simply look at those scores. If you have not taken the ACT or SAT, you will be required to take the COMPASS test before you can register for classes.  Either one of these tests will tell us where you need to begin in Math.

What if my scores don't really indicate how good I am in math? It is common that we forget how to do some areas of math if we have been out of school even for a couple years.  If you do not think the scores you received on the tests truly show what you are able to do, we offer math "brush-up" tutoring, and you may re-take the COMPASS test.

If I do need to brush up on math, are there still technical classes I can take while getting that math covered?  There are several classes you can take in the program even if you have to go way-back in math. Please see the linked document for recommended MIT classes based on your Math Scores.
