KCTCS Embraces Upcoming NBC “Community” Series

LEXINGTON, Ky. (September 16, 2009) – NBC’s new show “Community” is all about community colleges and the role they play in providing individuals with a second chance. The Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) is embracing the new series and the dialogue it will create around two-year colleges.

The new television series will premiere 9:30 p.m. Thursday, September 17. KCTCS will run a 30 second television spot during the premiere, encouraging Kentuckians to learn how KCTCS’ 16 colleges are transforming the lives of citizens and the state’s economy. The commercial can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMQkVdLrIVI .

In addition, Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) encourages viewers to post their thoughts about the show on the BCTC Fan Page discussion board on Facebook or through Twitter hashtag #bctccommunity. BCTC also encourages people to read real stories about how BCTC has impacted the lives students or watch a video on a day in the life of a student. The stories are posted on the college homepage, http://www.bluegrass.kctcs.edu , and the videos are posted on the BCTC channel on YouTube, http://www.youtube.com/bluegrassctcofficial .

The BCTC Fan Page can be found at http://www.facebook.com/bluegrassctc. Viewers can follow BCTC on Twitter @bluegrassctc or http://www.twitter.com/bluegrassctc .

Since 1998, KCTCS has transformed the lives of one in eight Kentuckians.  Last year alone, our 16 colleges trained: 100 percent of Kentucky-trained firefighters; nearly 24,000 nursing and allied health students; over 50,000 employees serving nearly 5,000 businesses; and more than 15,000 KCTCS students (2008-09 cohorts) who transferred to four-year institutions.

According to the Kentucky Department for Workforce Investment Occupational Outlook, by the year 2014, 83 percent of jobs will require the types of degrees provided by KCTCS.  So unlike the fictional Greendale Community College, KCTCS is focused on providing education in high growth, high wage jobs particularly in key industry growth segments such as Healthcare, Manufacturing, Energy, Banking and Financial Services, and Construction and Trades.

As the main character Jeff Winger (played by Joel McHale) says, “It’s about a Community!”  The same holds true for KCTCS.  Working with their local communities, KCTCS’ colleges provides Kentuckians with access to a postsecondary education that is both accessible and affordable.
