BCTC Receives National Science Foundation Grant

LEXINGTON, KY (August 26, 2008) –Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC) has received a $149,980 grant from the National Science Foundation for support of a “Waterjet Cutting Technology for Machine Tool Technicians” project.

Under the direction of BCTC faculty members Mark Welch and Russell Chaney, the two-year grant will be used to develop an effective training program in state-of-the-art waterjet cutting processes for machine tool technicians and other programs in manufacturing.

This exciting new water jet training will also offer a new credential for students enrolled in courses related to the training” said Welch. “BCTC will be the first in the Kentucky Community & Technical College System (KCTCS) to offer this new credential. The Machine Tool Technology Department is very pleased to provide training opportunities for students and companies to stay competitive in Kentucky. Training sessions for instructors, secondary teachers and industry representatives will take place starting in the 2008- 2009 academic year and will continue through September, 2010”.

The project will be housed at BCTC’s Danville Campus where students will have the opportunity to work on a waterjet cutting machine which is quickly becoming a new “standard tool” in machine shops around the world.
