BCTC Leads State with Highest Transfer Rate to Kentucky’s Four-Year Institutions

LEXINGTON, KY (September 20, 2007) – According to the recent  Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education’s 2006-07 Transfer Student Feedback Report, Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC), has the highest transfer rate of students to Kentucky’s four- year public or independent universities during the 2006-07 academic year among the 16 colleges in the Kentucky Community & Technical College System.

Transfer FairBCTC transferred 1,086 students last year, accounting for nearly one fourth of all KCTCS transfers. The college is the largest feeder to the state’s four-year public or independent universities including University of Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky University, Kentucky State University, and Northern Kentucky University.

The Council conducted the study in partnership with KCTCS to Benchmark transfer patterns and success, and to develop programs for creating a more seamless system of postsecondary education.

“We are pleased that Bluegrass and other KCTCS colleges have transferred a record number of students to Kentucky’s public and private colleges and universities, and we are committed to achieving higher goals in the future,” said Dr. Larry Durrence, Interim President of Bluegrass Community & Technical College.  “At Bluegrass, we will also work to ensure that a greater percentage of our transfers earn an associate’s degree first because this will increase the odds that they will ultimately complete the bachelor’s degree.”

BCTC was awarded a U.S. Department of Education, Title III Grant in 2005 to establish the first transfer center in the state. The Transfer Center is located on the Cooper Campus and provides advising, computer resources and campus visits for students interested in four year institutions. Interactive kiosks connect students from the other BCTC campuses to the Transfer Center. A Peers Rallying Inspiration, Dreams & Education (PRIDE) program focuses on minority students and matches current students with mentors who assist students transfer exploration.
