“College Experience Camp” Offers High School Students a Taste of College LEXINGTON, KY (August 10, 2007) – Juniors and Seniors from across Kentucky and four local high schools including Bryan Station, Henry Clay, Lafayette, and Tates Creek attended Bluegrass Community & Technical College’s (BCTC) second annual “College Experience Camp”. The diverse group of students are from eight countries including Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, the Ivory Coast, and the Philippines spent a week as college students at BCTC.
“This year’s camp was a success in that 28 high school and college students, all prospective and current first generation college students, had the opportunity to experience college life first hand. At the beginning of the week, the students were very uncertain about college and were very unfamiliar with BCTC and with each other. By the end of the week, the students truly demonstrated ownership of their responsibilities to academically prepare for college, and they took ownership of the college campus,” said Erin Howard Hispanic Outreach Coordinator for Bluegrass Community & Technical College.
The camp, sponsored by the BCTC Office of Multicultural Affairs and a grant from the Partners for Youth’s Community Juvenile Justice Partnership qualifies students for college scholarships offered by both organizations. Jimmy Sotero Romulo, a Senior at Montgomery County High School, Oscar Rodriguez, a Freshman at BCTC, Eduardo Ordaz, and Dunia Rashidi, both Seniors at Henry Clay High School were nominated to receive Partners in Youth scholarships. Nominees for the BCTC Mosaic Scholarships will be announced in the fall. |

The camp was held on the BCTC Cooper Campus and provided an opportunity for participants to attend classes, participate in social activities, and stay overnight in the dorms. Programming also included a talent show, a soccer game, and interactive college preparation workshops.
Participants in the camp also explored life at other college campuses including a visit to the Hummel Planetarium, lunch, and tour of Eastern Kentucky University.
