SCHS Manufacturing Academy Students Participate in Interactive Exercise at BCTC

LEXINGTON, KY (March 7, 2007) – Twenty students from the Manufacturing Academy at Scott County High School recently participated in an interactive exercise at Bluegrass Community & Technical College.

Students were introduced to three separate, but integral phases of manufacturing. The first stage involved the drafting, drawing and design of a specially designed Scott County Studentsschool coin. Students then used the Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) program to produce a computer blueprint of a SCHS coin that included their initials. They then applied their newly acquired CAD blueprint skills to the second stage in the manufacturing process, the Computer Aided Maching (CAM). During the CAM process, the coin is produced to the size and shape detailed in the blueprint. The third phase allowed students to use a Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machine to enter their initials and personalize their coin.

The Manufacturing Academy was developed for area high schools by the Center for Quality People (CQPO), Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky Community & Technical College (KCTCS), Bluegrass Community & Technical College, Bourbon County Public Schools and Paris Independent Schools. In the Academy’s pilot year, Bourbon County High School and Paris Independent Schools participated.  The second year of the academy has seen the addition of Scott County High School and Southside Area Training Center in Lexington.

The Manufacturing Academy provides juniors and seniors the opportunity to study online and receive the Kentucky Manufacturing Skills Standard (KMSS) and Quest Manufacturing Certification (QMC). KMSS and QMC include training for soft skills needed in manufacturing such as teamwork, problem solving, and safety. Students who complete the Manufacturing Academy are administered the Self Assessment for Manufacturing (SAM) test. Toyota Motor Manufacturing administers the SAM test in the application process to determine specific skills a potential employee may have that will aid in hiring and placement.

The students will also visit the Advanced Technology Center in Georgetown, and the University of Kentucky‘s College of Engineering.
