Peace and Justice Coalition Spring Speaker Series Announced

LEXINGTON, KY (March 7, 2007) – Iran’s nuclear issues, capitalism, and global warming are but a few topics covered in the Peace and Justice Coalition’s Spring Speaker Series being offered at Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC).

The spring speaker series will take place at the BCTC, Cooper Campus, 470 Cooper Drive, Lexington.

April 10, from 11:00 - 12:15 p.m., “Iran” presented by Hossein Motamedi, a native of Iran, will discuss the evolution of the U.S. foreign policy vis a vis Iran and its nuclear issue from 1946 to present. Presentation will take place in room 242 of the Oswald building.

April 11, from 6:30 - 7:45 p.m., “Promoting World Peace through the United Nations”, presented by Steve Stone, BCTC Campus Librarian.  Mr. Stone will look at the United Nations’ beginning, history, mission, organization, and programs in the field; setting and implementing Millennium goals, as well as the impact of non-governmental agencies. Presentation will take place in the Auditorium, room 230 of the Oswald building.

April 13, from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m., “Transforming the 'Capital' in Capitalism” presented by Susmita Barua. The speaker invites you to a playful yet thought provoking exploration of a little understood and greatly feared beast - the modern mythical dragon called "Capitalism"! Maybe there is a way to deconstruct this "Tyrannosaurus Rex", once we are no longer afraid to look at it closely. Maybe we can all be part of a multipurpose solution rather than part of an ever-growing boomeritis of poverty, war, injustice, pollution, institutional and social-mental dysfunctions of all kinds. The evolutionary imperative now is to see how we can collectively engage our minds in addressing this system wide challenge by using the light of our own awareness and enlightened thinking. Presentation will take place in the Auditorium, room 230 of the Oswald building.

April 18, from 1:00 - 2:00p.m., “World Vision” presented by Erin Howard, BCTC Hispanic Outreach Coordinator. World Vision, one of the largest international non-governmental organizations serves the poor and oppressed in 100 countries through relief, development, sustainability, and advocacy.  The program will explore three major crisis situations affecting children world-wide: Child Exploitation, Child Soldiers, and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The interactive session will also include ways individuals can get involved to make a difference through advocacy, sponsorship, and education. Presentation will take place in the Auditorium, room 230 of the Oswald building.

April 18, from 6:30 - 7:45 p.m., “The Sustainable Cities Network: Philosophical and Practical Implications of the Sustainability Movement” presented by Jim Embry. This presentation will look at the need to go beyond Newtonian thinking and to embrace quantum thinking in our design of sustainable communities that integrate environmental stewardship, economic prosperity, social equity and community empowerment. Presentation will take place in the Auditorium, room 230 of the Oswald building.

April 19, from 3:30 - 4:45 p.m., “Mountaintop Removal” presented by Dave Cooper. Mr. Cooper, a mechanical engineer turned environmental and social activist will present the “Mountaintop Removal Road Show.” The program includes a twenty minute slide show featuring traditional Appalachian mountain music and aerial photographs of Eastern Kentucky Mountains. After discussing the impacts of mountaintop removal on coalfield communities, attention will focus on ways to reduce personal consumption of electricity from coal-fired power plants. Presentation will take place in the Auditorium, room 230 of the Oswald building.

April 19, from 5:00 - 6:15 p.m., “Global Warming - Confronting a Crisis” presented by Andy McDonald of the Kentucky Solar Partnership. Nineteen years after Bill McKibben published "The End of Nature" and warned us of the threats posed by global warming; the world has awakened to the crisis of global climate change. What's causing this crisis and what can be done about it? What can YOU do about it? Presentation will take place in the Auditorium, room 230 of the Oswald building.
