BCTC’s Science Excel Program Receives 500,000 Dollar National Science Foundation Grant
LEXINGTON, KY (January 24, 2007) – The National Science Foundation has awarded Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC) with a $500,000 dollar grant awarded over the next five years to sponsor their newly created Science Excel Program. The Science Excel Program is a cohort, student support program for the students in the Natural Sciences division.
“We are excited to have the resources to be able to provide more access and opportunity to science education for academically gifted but financially challenged students across the Commonwealth,” said Tammy Liles, Assistant Dean of Natural Sciences, and Project Director.
Awarding 20 scholarships a year to students who declare a major in biology, chemistry, physics, or environmental science technology, the Science Excel Program will provide more than funding. Students will benefit from a variety of support services that include intense advising, a science resource center, a residence hall learning community, industry experiences and opportunities to participate in research projects at both BCTC and the University of Kentucky.
In addition to providing resources for BCTC science students the Science Excel Program hopes to lead the way as a pipeline for financially disadvantaged and underrepresented groups into science careers and on to baccalaureate degrees.
