Audiovisuals

Reserve AV equipment as far in advance as possible, especially video equipment.  For reservations, contact the Instructional Media Desk (246-4693). To reserve equipment online, complete the form.

To request AV material purchases, talk with Charles James (x56393). An online AV order form is available.  For film or video rentals, your program or areas pay the rental fee. Check with your program or area coordinator.

To request assistance in the production of videos, cd's, presentations and instructional materials, contact Rick Rydz (x56391), or Ray Mizell (x56389).

Circulation

Books circulate to faculty for a period of 90 days. All audiovisual items not on Reserve circulate for 14 days. Any item may be renewed if a hold has not been placed on it by another patron. If you have questions about library circulation policies, contact Terry Buckner (x56397).

E-mail

All BCTC faculty can get a KCTCS e-mail account. For more information, contact the office manager in your academic department. Your e-mail account usually will be of this format: firstname.lastname@kctcs.edu

Database Searches

Faculty and students have access to databases from the BCTC Learning Resource Center website

Off-campus Database Access

To access the Kentucky Virtual Library, go to the KYVL link on the LRC's articles webpage and use the KYVL login/password ( BCTC faculty may request the current KYVL login/password from any BCTC librarian; the login/password generally changes at least twice a year).

To access BCTC proxied databases,  use the BCTC proxied database links to connect, instead. Most of the links on the LRC's articles webpage are proxied links, and you use your Peoplesoft username/password to login, instead.

JSTOR, ARTstor, Academic OneFile, NewsBank, and ebrary databases can only be accessed off-campus through proxied links such as on the LRC articles webpage; they are not available through KYVL. The ebrary full-text electronic book database proxied link can be found on the LRC books webpage. All ebrary links in the KCTCS catalog are proxied links as well.

Directions for using the BCTC proxy server are at the BCTC Proxy Help Page . You must be a BCTC student or faculty and have an activated KCTCS Peoplesoft e-mail address to use this system. If you have further questions about off-campus access, contact Maureen Cropper (x56394) or Steve Stone (x56387)

Electronic Reserves

If copyright limitations are observed,  some items or files may be submitted to be placed on  LRC Electronic Reserve. The materials will be available online, under password protection. You will be given usernames and passwords to share with your students. To learn more about Electronic Reserves, visit the Electronic Reserves webpage and contact Maureen Cropper.

Interlibrary Loan

We can borrow materials from all of the Kentucky community
college libraries, all of the University of Kentucky libraries, and other libraries throughout the state and United States. You may complete an Interlibrary Loan form online.

Learning Resource Center Book Purchases

We encourage faculty to make recommendations for purchases. You can request materials at any time during the year. Contact any of the librarians for assistance in preparing purchasing requests. To see if a requested item has arrived, contact Kathleen Richardson (x56380). To purchase a book, fill out the online book purchase request form.

Learning Resource Center Tours

We have an audio self-guided LRC tour. If you want to require your students to take the LRC tour, contact Marcia Freyman (x56396).

Library Instruction

We will tailor library instruction to your class upon request. If
you have a library assignment that your students need help with and you would like to schedule a library instruction session, contact Marcia Freyman (x56396) for Cooper Campus instruction sessions or Steve Stone (x56387) for instruction sessions on all other campuses. You may also complete an online request form at:

http://www.bluegrass.kctcs.edu/lrc/bib/ (for Cooper Campus sessions)  http://www.bluegrass.kctcs.edu/lrc/bibext/ (for All Other Campuses)

Please allow ample time for us to prepare custom handouts. You may want to refer students to our LRC Online Research Guide for help in library research.

Please check out our help sheet on Designing Library Assignments. We hope these guidelines will help you create library-related assignments that will be a learning experience for your students.

Periodicals

The LRC receives over 250 periodical titles. Current issues are located in the Periodicals Browsing Area. Bound issues are shelved in the Periodicals Stacks, between AV materials (A/V) and the circulating book collection. Leestown Periodicals are located on the shelves at the Leestown branch.  (BCTC Stacks). The Periodicals do not have a call number, instead they are shelved alphabetically, by title. Many periodical titles are also available on microfilm.

If you have any questions about our periodicals collection, please contact:

Reserves

Contact the Circulation Department, (ext. 56380) for Cooper Campus Reserves, or Judith Craft (ext. 56712) for Leestown Campus Reserves.

Allow at least one week for items to be put on Reserve. If the materials you are placing on reserve are owned by the library, fill out and submit the Online Reserve Request Form. If you want to put personal copies on Reserve, please print the Printable Reserve Request Form, fill it out, and bring it to the library, along with the materials you want to place on Reserve. Do not assign Reserve readings before they are actually on Reserve.

If you anticipate putting articles or other papers (lecture notes, exam copies) on Reserve frequently, see Terry Buckner (ext. 56397) about setting up a notebook to which items may be added throughout the semester. Reference items are not placed on Reserve. Reserve items circulate for 2 hours within the LRC or 24 hours (overnight checkout), as specified by the faculty member. Space restrictions allow only up to two copies of any item on Reserve.

We arrange Reserve materials by course prefix and number, so make sure your students know the course and number as well as the title of the material they are requesting. If you have required readings on Reserve, you might include this information in your syllabus. We require a valid ID card for library check-outs, so you might also advise your students that they need their IDs to use Reserve materials.

If you would like to take an item off Reserve, please use the Remove From Reserves Form.

Certain types of materials may also be placed on Electronic Reserve.  See Above for details.
