Anthropology
The discipline of anthropology seeks to understand the nature of human societies; the communities, organizations, and institutions that comprise these; the systems of cultural meanings that form and inform them; and the interplay between individuals' lives and the societies in which they reside. In the global society of today, moreover, such understanding increasingly requires recognition and study of the interactions among societies and especially the political, economic, and cultural elements of power-often embodied in structures of class, gender, ethnicity, and race-that operate not only locally and nationally but at the global level as well.
