The Bluegrass Community & Technical College North American Racing Academy (NARA) in Lexington, Ky. is preparing for a new year and a new phase of operations.

BCTC-NARA began in 2006 and is based in the Thoroughbred Training Center on Paris Pike. The team of instructors and staff provides students with an unparalleled body of expertise with over 90 combined years of experience in the areas of race riding, training, farm and track management and education. Jockeys who have completed the program have ridden in over 11,000 races combined, earning over $16 million, and the program isn’t slowing down.

Newly named Executive Director Remi Bellocq – former National Horsemen's Benevolence & Protective Association (HBPA) CEO – is at the reins, and NARA has recently announced several initiatives designed to further solidify its presence in the horse racing industry.

“Since its inception, with the wonderful support of KCTCS and Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC), NARA has achieved a remarkable set of accomplishments,” Bellocq said. “We want to build on this success by initiating what I’m calling ‘NARA 2.0,’ and cement our role as the horseracing and breeding industries’ workforce provider.”

BCTC-NARA will focus on many new ventures, including placement of second-year, ready-to-graduate students with top trainers and breeders for short mentorships during Keeneland’s renowned spring and fall meets and sales. This will allow students to easily network with potential employers and give professional horsemen and horsewomen a chance to vet new prospects for their racing stable or breeding farm teams.

“Horsemen have said loudly that they are in constant need of well-trained and willing workers,” Bellocq said. “There currently exists, industry-wide, a heavy reliance on foreign labor, which has become unreliable given the lack of immigration reform in recent years. As such, they come to us for the locally sourced equine industry workforce we can help provide.”

Over 80 percent of BCTC-NARA students are successfully placed in internships or full-time employment as jockeys, exercise riders or racing stable and breeding farm employees. In the past, graduates have been placed with industry-leading trainers such as Todd Pletcher, Steve Asmussen, Jonathan Sheppard, Ken McPeek, Richard Mandella and Graham Motion to name a few. In addition to the placement of graduates with top racing stables, some have been placed with leading sales agencies and farms, including WinStar and Eaton Sales.

NARA is also in the process of re-building its website and is working with major North American horsemen’s groups and associations to create an interactive online job bank which will match graduating students with horsemen who are hiring. The site will feature bios and videos of soon-to-graduate NARA students who will be looking for employment.

Curriculum changes have been initiated to bring more emphasis to racehorse care and training and barn management training. BCTC-NARA will offer a one-year (26 credit) Exercise Rider and Racehorse Care and Training certificate program in addition to the two-year Associate degree curricula (65-68 credits) already offered through a Jockey or Horseman pathway.

Regardless of which path is chosen, all students must complete core technical courses on basic equine science, racehorse care, equine physiology and lameness, introduction to the racing industry, racing regulation and stable operations. This assures all students will receive a broad background.

Initiatives have been started to establish more direct ties locally and internationally. This summer and fall, BCTC-NARA is partnering with Locust Trace Agriscience Farm to offer courses to recent high school graduates who are interested in horse racing and breeding. The program is also trying to expand overseas membership by working with the European Association of Racing Schools (EARS). NARA hopes to start a student internship exchange program with EARS by late 2012 or early 2013 with the assistance of the Lexington Sister Cities Council.

Orientation Meetings

NARA is offering two pre-admission orientation meetings this spring for local high school graduates and their parents, as well as other interested applicants. Information on the admissions process can be found on our Equine Studies page or by calling (859) 293-0209.

The first meeting will be held on March 9, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. on the grounds of the Thoroughbred Training Center.

The second will be held on April 16 at 1:00 p.m. at the Keeneland Track Kitchen followed by a brief barn area tour.

Admission deadline is May 7, 2012.

Bluegrass Community and Technical College Honors 2012 Hall of Fame Alumni

Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) is proud to honor Kathryn H. Hunt as the newest member of the Super Sunday Hall of Fame.

Hunt graduated from Lexington Community College (LCC) now known as Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC) in 1989 with an associate in arts degree and later transferred to the University of Louisville where she became the first African American to graduate from the physical therapy program.

Upon completion of the physical therapy program, Hunt worked at the University of Kentucky outpatient department for thirteen years before joining Drayer Physical Therapy Institute, where she has worked for the last seven years. She also works as a lab assistant to Tony English Ph.D., where she provides clinical input and serves as a mentor for current and perspective physical therapy students. Additionally, Hunt works with Fayette County Public School’s Experienced-Based Career Education program for high school students, and with other student volunteers who have an interest in the physical therapy profession.

“My community college experience at BCTC was very instrumental in allowing me to apply to physical therapy school,” said Hunt. “My instructors not only taught me how to study and how to get the grades I needed to prepare for the university level, but also helped me to believe that I could reach my ultimate goal.”

BCTC and each of the other 15 Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) colleges and System Office will partner with churches in their communities to host Super Sunday information fairs for prospective college students and their families on February 12.

BCTC will host three Super Sunday events this year in collaboration with:

Consolidated Baptist Church, 1625 Russell Cave Road, Lexington, Ky. at 9:45 a.m.

St. James AME Church, 124 Walnut Street, Danville, Ky. at 10:30 a.m.

First Baptist Church, 37 North Highland Avenue, Winchester, Ky. At 11:00 a.m.

Speakers for BCTC’s Super Sunday event include Reverend Richard Gaines, pastor Consolidated Baptist Church with special introduction of BCTC President Dr. Augusta A. Bean Dental Radiology Award

Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC) Dental Hygiene student, Kacey L. Muntz, has been named the 2011 recipient of the L.R. Bean Dental Radiology Award.

The award is named for Dr. L.R. Bean who taught dental radiology at Lexington Community College (now BCTC) for more than 17 years. In 1991, he created an endowment for a dental hygiene student who showed “empathy with patients, a sense of humor, and exceptional abilities in the area of oral radiology.” Since Dr. Bean’s death, his family has continued to sponsor the scholarship.

“Dr. Bean was a true treasure and extremely dedicated to providing quality education for all students,” said Debbie Kelly, BCTC professor of Dental Hygiene. “Kacey is a very talented student and is someone that the scholarship committee felt Dr. Bean would have enjoyed teaching.”

“I am honored to be selected as the 2011 recipient of the L.R. Bean Dental Radiology Award,” said Muntz. “The Dental Hygiene program at BCTC has prepared me for my new career as a successful clinician.”
Muntz graduated from Harrison County High School in 2008 and currently resides in Paris, KY. After graduating from BCTC this spring, she plans to move back to Harrison County and pursue a career in dental hygiene.

A BCTC & Toyota Program Gives Students On-the-Factory-Floor Training in Georgetown

Source: By Stephen Burnett, a KyForward contributor.

When Christina Partin was still a child, and her mechanic father would work on cars, tractors or lawnmowers, she would often want to go outside and watch the repairs. Yes, she was a daddy’s girl, she said with a laugh — but her father didn’t prefer her hanging around car parts and tools.

He told me that I couldn’t do it, because it was a dad thing,” Partin said.

Her father, however, has since tuned up his views, she said later, because in 2010 when Partin graduated from Western Hills High School in Frankfort, she found herself pursuing a very similar career. Staff of Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc., and Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) in Georgetown, had begun a new effort: the Advanced Manufacturing Technician Program. Partin began working as an intern for Toyota that summer, and in the fall her classes began. Those classes were specifically geared to teach multiple skills, equipping students not only for Toyota, but for most other manufacturing firms.

Having been the first person of her struggling family to graduate from high school, Partin now has more notable firsts: going to college, and being among the first students of the program.

“I’m already a complete different person,” she said. “I’ve done things I didn’t think I could do.”

Assembling Workers

“The program was really meant for us to develop skilled maintenance workers,” said Jim Mattingly, a recruiter with Toyota. “When we first came to Toyota, the people we hired were maintenance people in the beginning.” But limited knowledge of trades, especially spread out among several people, can only go so far in manufacturing, he said. Once firms could have hired one electrician, and one welder. Now firms prefer hiring one person who has skills in multiple fields, not only electricity and welding, but robotics, pneumatics, hydraulics and more, he said.

“There’s just a shortage of this kind of skilled laborer,” added Rick Hesterburg, with Toyota’s corporate communications.

Working together to help BCTC build students, who can then find jobs with manufacturers, was a prime opportunity for the college and Toyota, Mattingly continued. “With these students, we’re going to have a much better workforce in the future.”

This year, BCTC and Toyota supervisors are working with a third class of students, all recruits directly out of high schools. The program spans five semesters, across two years and including summers. When students finish, they will have at least 80 credit hours within their associate’s degree in manufacturing and industrial technology.

That will also benefit central Kentucky, said Mark Manuel, vice president of workforce and institutional development at BCTC. “We are in a hotbed of manufacturing here, even though most people think that manufacturing is dead,” he said. “It’s not. It’s growing.”

Manuel also helped assemble the internship program, in which students work 40 hours a week: 24 in the plant on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 16 hours in classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and occasionally during evenings. Their work in the plant starts at $12 an hour, and depending on both their work proficiency and grades in school, they can get raises, up to $16 an hour, plus overtime payments, Mattingly said.

“It’s what people in academics call ‘work and learn,’” Manuel said. Such programs have existed for years, but have somewhat fallen out of favor, despite their beneficial approaches. “Our relationship with Toyota is fairly unique, because we are located on their facility; we work hand-in-hand with them,” he said. “They work together that closely. And that’s a good thing.”

Twenty-four students are in the program now, and Mattingly recently finished recruiting for the fall 2012 semester, from students at 19 high schools across the state. Their objectives are to find students who are interested in engineering in manufacturing, are skilled in math, and enjoy working with their hands. They have likely been in skilled trades programs already, he said.

On the Floor

Even before Partin began her first semester, she had spent several weeks in training at Toyota. That included safety training — something to which she had to grow accustomed. “I almost didn’t get into the program because I was scared because I was so little, and the machines were so big!” she said. At about 105 pounds and just over five feet tall, the factory floor was at first intimidating. “You have cars floating over your head all the time, pretty much. … In the shop that I’m in, we have forty-ton cranes, or forty-ton models being carried by cranes above you. It’s very, very easy — if you don’t know what you’re doing — it’s very easy to get hurt.”

But during those first weeks, and in the years afterward, Partin had no accidents. “They tell us all the time, they can replace us at work, but they can’t replace us at home,” she said.

Toyota’s Georgetown plant is the largest in North America, more than 25 years old and with 7.5 million square feet of floor space under one roof, equivalent to 156 football fields, Hesterburg said. Its workers can build 500,000 cars within a year. “When times are good, and our volume is ticking back up, it’s not unusual for us to make about two thousand cars here a day,” he added.

In that factory and in classes, Partin soon learned there were few boundaries between the two. “We actually learn, in the environment we’re working in,” she said. “I have friends in regular college, and they always told me how they wish they had gotten into an internship, because they hate sitting in a class with fifty people or more. … It’s really boring, and they’re not able to learn how they want to.” By contrast, the work pays for much of her tuition — along with a scholarship she obtained — and also allowed her finally to purchase her dream pickup truck.

Still, the job and classes, along with her second job at Advance Auto Parts, keeps her busy. “I don’t really get to get out and do a whole lot, because I’m focusing on my future,” Partin said. “The only thing I’m going now is to try to encourage someone else to go beyond what they know, or what they thought they could do. … I didn’t think I could do anything I’m doing now.”

Manufacturing Futures

This May, Partin will graduate. “My knowledge level is going to be up the roof,” she said. “I will have learned electricity, I will have learned motors. … I’ll have learned robots.” So far, she has two possibilities then: either go on to more college, perhaps for three more years to earn an engineering degree, or head into more work with Toyota, if that’s possible.

Mattingly said that Toyota cannot, and does not, guarantee future jobs with every student who participates in the program. But if students graduate with a good manufacturing skill set, they will be able to go out and find a job anywhere, he said. Though other colleges may teach similar manufacturing skills, few other programs can guarantee that, Mattingly added. “But what they don’t get is the Toyota training and teaching, working in the plant.”

That training has not only revolutionized Partin’s view of herself and her capabilities, but persuaded her father as well. When he saw how much she loved working with tools and car parts, on a larger scale, he changed his mind, she explained with a laugh. Since then, he’s attempted to teach her more of what he knows himself about repairing vehicles.

Yet in some sense, a high-school student needs a specific series of preexisting talents to find possibilities in this program, or manufacturing altogether, Partin said.

Be sure that you know your math skills,” she suggested. “You just have to be sure that you’re headstrong, and you don’t give up easy. … The only person holding you back from doing anything that you want to, no matter what it is, is yourself.”

As for the program’s future, classes for interns may be able to move out of the Toyota building itself and into a new building. College classes hosted within a Toyota building, with Toyota badges on students, have been incorrectly perceived as loyalty to one company, Manuel explained. “Once we get the funding for that (building), we’ll be a real nucleus for advanced manufacturing in this region,” he added. “That’s really the key factor in attracting new businesses, and even expanding existing businesses.”

National Award Winning Poet to Speak at BCTC

LEXINGTON, Ky. (January 12, 2012) Faculty, staff and students from Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) will join hundreds of other citizens on Monday, January 16 for Lexington’s 40th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom March. The march begins at 10 a.m. and departs from downtown at the Lexington Center Heritage Hall on West Main Street.

The Enlace Latino student organization will lead BCTC in the march this year and will be joined by other BCTC students, faculty and staff.

“Dr. Martin Luther King would be greatly honored by the unity that this celebration brings to our city,” said BCTC Vice President for Multiculturalism and Inclusion Charlene Walker. “This is a great opportunity for the entire community and BCTC to recognize the importance of coming together in unity and fellowship.”

Following the march, a commemorative program will be held at 11 a.m. at the Lexington Center Heritage Hall.

Bluegrass Community and Technical College Helps Students Navigate New SAP Requirements

LEXINGTON, Ky. (January 12, 2012) – Bluegrass Community and Technical College students who receive financial aid have new guidelines to meet due to recent changes to the Federal Satisfactory Academic Policy (SAP).

While there have always been academic guidelines set in order for students to receive federal and state financial aid, the new guidelines will help identify at-risk students earlier than before.

“SAP is not new. Students have always been held responsible for academic performance,” Director of Financial Aid, Runan Pendergrast said. “However, students are now being held to a higher level of accountability.”

Under the new regulations, BCTC students will have one semester on an academic warning period instead of the previous two. Also, students must be on pace to progress toward graduation by 150% of credit requirement. For example, a student enrolled in a 60-hour associate degree program cannot receive financial aid beyond their 90th credit hour attempted. And lastly, students must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA and complete at least 67% of their classes each semester to remain eligible.

BCTC students are informed of SAP during orientation and it is included in the financial aid award acknowledgement. The acknowledgement notice is sent when the student has been awarded financial aid. The notice is sent via e-mail to continuing students and by postal mail to new students.

E-mails and voicemails were sent to all students whose record indicated they would not be eligible for financial aid in the fall semester to inform them of the new guidelines and offer information about the appeal process. The BCTC appeal date was also extended to allow more students to file.

“We are in the business of student success,” Pendergrast said. “We offer many tools and programs such as tutoring and advising to help students succeed.”
