Katelyn M. Mullins, a Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC) dental hygiene student, is the 2012 recipient of the L.R. Bean Dental Radiology Award.
The award is named for Dr. L.R. Bean, who taught dental radiology at Lexington Community College (now BCTC) for more than 17 years. In 1991, he created an endowment for dental hygiene students who showed "empathy with patients, a sense of humor and exceptional abilities in the area of oral radiology." Since Dr. Bean's death, his family has continued to sponsor the scholarship, which is awarded to one student each year.
"I am very thankful that I have been chosen as the recipient of this award. I am beyond grateful to the Bean family and I feel that it is such an amazing thing that they continue to help students like myself throughout the years," Mullins said.
Mullins graduated from Letcher County Central High School in 2009 and currently resides in Lexington. "After graduation from BCTC this spring I plan to get married, start a family and be the best dental hygienist I can be," Mullins said. "I will continue to serve God and live my life according to his will."
BCTC faculty member Mary W. Jones was awarded the Outstanding Dental Hygienist Award from the Bluegrass District Dental Hygienists’ Association at the October 18, 2012 meeting.
