Field Experience

Field experiences are designed to include a number of opportunities in various child care settings. In each semester throughout the program students will most likely be observing and/or participating in a child care classroom. The National Association for the Education of Young Children recommends that students in associate degree programs spend 300 hours in their field experiences with children. Students are required to complete a portion of their hours outside their own classroom if they are employed in child care. Family Day Care students should plan to fulfill their practicum requirements in a center.

The settings in which students participate must meet ONE of the following criteria:

  • Two STAR Rating or above (center and/or Family Day Care Home)
  • NAEYC Accreditation or Family Child Care Home Certification
  • KERA Preschools (for some courses only)
  • Head Start sites: Community Action Council or surrounding counties
  • Home Visiting agencies: First Steps, Head Start, etc. (with supervision)

Students participating in the following classes must provide the documentation outlined below before being allowed in a childcare/classroom/home setting: 

Hours listed are the total number of hours required during the semester.

IECE 101 Orientation to Early Childhood Education:                             20 hrs.  

IECE 102 Foundations of Early Childhood Education:                           20 hrs.

IECE 120 Health, Safety and Nutrition                                                   10 hrs.

IECE 130 Early Childhood Development:                                              10 hrs.    

IECE 170 Observation and Assessment:                                                20 hrs.

IECE 180 Approaches to ECE Curriculum:                                            10 hrs.

IECE 200 Child Guidance                                                                       10 hrs.

IECE 210 Families and Communities in ECE                                         10 hrs.

IECE 216 Literacy and Language in IECE                                              10 hrs.

IECE 221 Creative Expressions in IECE                                                10 hrs.

IECE 235 Intro to Inclusive Education                                                    20 hrs.    

IECE 240 Administration of Early Childhood Education                        10 hrs.

IECE 246 Life Sciences in IECE                                                             10 hrs.

IECE 260 Infant/Toddler Programming                                                  10 hrs.

IECE 291 IECE Practicum/Cooperative Education                 225 hrs.  (15 hrs./wk.)

1)  Proof of a negative TB Skin Test- Obtained through your Doctor’s office and/or any Health department and must be updated every 2 years. Keep your original and provide BCTC with a copy.

2)  Certification of Hepatitis B inoculation OR signed Declination form- If you have undergone the Hepatitis B inoculation series, you need to submit verification to the course instructor (a copy of the record). If you would like to undergo the inoculation it can be obtained through any Doctor’s office and/or Health department. OR, you may sign a waiver which releases BCTC from any liability should you contract or carry the disease. 

3)  Criminal Record check- Forms will be made available in the identified courses.

4)  Liability insurance- Must be paid separately from the course fees in the Business Office. The policy covers a student for a year (Sept.-Sept., Jan.-Jan., or June-June) depending on when the student enrolls.

5)  Confidentiality Statement- Outlines the necessity and responsibility for privacy of the child care centers, children, families, faculty, staff and students at all times.

6)  Statement of Understanding- A legal document outlining the responsibilities of the student and the college.
