Bluegrass Book Club for October 2009

Please plan to join the Bluegrass Literary Discussion group for the October discussion on Wednesday, October 28th at 5:00 pm at the Talon Winery Private tasting room. (Talon winery is located at 7086 Tates Creek Rd, Lexington.)

The October selection will be Elizabeth Strout’s Olive Kitteridge.  Olive Kitteridge is the 2009 Pulitzer Winner for Fiction.

Olive Kitteridge is a collection of thirteen linked tales featuring the character, Olive Ketteridge.  The stories cover a thirty year span of the character’s ordinary life and the natural wonders of coastal Maine.  Themes of aging, love, depression, bad communication flow within the stories.   Humorous and at times deeply disturbing, the stories offer a literary craft and emotional power that is impossible to forget.

- For many years Henry Kitteridge was a pharmacist in the next town over, driving every morning on snowy roads, or rainy roads, or summer roads, when the wild raspberries shot their new growth in brambles along the last section of town before he turned off to where the wider road led to the pharmacy.  Retired now, he still wakes early and remembers how morning used to be his favorite as though the world were his secret………..-

“Pharmacy” from Oliver Kitteridge
