WELCOME TO MEDICAL ASSISTING

The Medical Assisting Program at Bluegrass Community and Technical College offers an AAS (Associate Degree in Applied Science), diploma program for medical assisting, and three certificate options.

The Medical Assisting program prepares the graduate to become an integral member of the health care delivery team, qualified by education and experience to work in various health care settings. Courses cover a variety of topics including administrative, medical, clinical, and laboratory. Many skills will be covered such as injections, phlebotomy, vital signs, basic laboratory testing, microscopes, electrocardiograms, and spirometry.

The Medical Assistant is a vital liaison between the doctor and the patient and plays an important role in diagnosis and treatment. The many different roles assumed in this profession assure a fast moving and challenging career.

Versatility is key to the medical assisting profession. Graduates have many choices upon completion of the medical assisting program including: administrative or front office position, clinical or back office position, or mixture of both front and back office. Additionally graduates may choose the type of medical practice they would like to work in such as obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, cardiology, internal medicine, family practice, as well as many others. With experience, graduates can move into management positions if desired.
