Admission to the DLT Program

Selective Admission: Dental Laboratory

The process for applying has changed for the 2010 application year.  We are now going to a “Complete Application Packet” format.   Students must submit all documents below in one envelope to be considered for the program.  Even if you have applied before and/or are currently enrolled, we will need all documents resubmitted to the Office of Admissions, room 200 Oswald Building, Cooper Campus by February 15, 2010 for admissions to the fall of 2010 program.  Only complete packets will be processed and considered for the program. 

Gather all of the documents required for consideration of the Dental Laboratory program below and place in the large envelope provided:

• Print the Information Letter and the Letter of Intent Checklist below and submit the checklist with your packet

• Students who are currently enrolled in classes at BCTC as a "Dental Laboratory Pending" student must submit a complete packet of all documents listed here.  Students who are not currently enrolled in classes at BCTC must fill out an application for admission and a complete packet of all documents.

• Official transcripts of all post-secondary education attempted. Transcripts must be submitted from EACH college or university previously attended and must show every period of enrollment.  Transcripts from the Kentucky Community and Technical College System do not need to be submitted.

Reminder: Incomplete packets will not be accepted.  Please turn in your packet to the Office of Admissions, Cooper Campus, by February 15, 2010.  Please allow 7-10 business days to process your application to the dental laboratory program.  If you are currently enrolled, you will be able to access MyBin here to check on the status of your application.  If you would like to submit a GPA recalculation form please do that here.

 

Data to Submit

1) Students who are currently enrolled in classes at BCTC must fill out a Letter of Intent, available in MyBIN. Students who are not currently enrolled in classes at BCTC must fill out an application for admission, also available in the Office of Admissions, the One-Stop Center, or online.

2) Official transcripts of all post-secondary education attempted (except KCTCS schools).

3) Interview form (pre-admission conference) with the program coordinator (or designee). If you do this online, print out the confirmation email that you'll receive and put that in your packet.

Preference Categories

1) Preference may be given to applicants who have completed at least 12 credit hours of post-secondary education (non-remedial) with a 2.4 or higher grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).

2) Preference may be given to applicants with an enhanced ACT composite score of 19 or above, if less than 12 credit hours of postsecondary education have been earned.

3) Preference may be given to applicants with a baccalaureate or higher degree.

4) Preference may be given to applicants with a certificate or degree in Dental Assisting or Dental Hygiene.

5) Preference may be given to applicants with previous work experience in the dental field.

6) Preference may be given to Kentucky residents.

Retention and Progress in the Program

1) A student must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for all Dental Laboratory Technology courses in order to remain in the program.

2) A student who withdraws from a Dental Laboratory Technology course (other than DLT 111 or DLT 112) will not be permitted to continue in the program.

3) A student must continue to meet the Technical Standards in order to remain in the program.

Technical Standards

Dental laboratory technicians fabricate custom-made prostheses designed to meet each patient's specific needs. In order to be considered for admission and to be retained in the program, applicants must possess the following:

1) Sufficient visual acuity, such as is needed in the fabrication of small detailed dental prostheses.

2) Sufficient gross and fine motor skills to properly manipulate instruments and equipment required in the fabrication of dental prostheses.

3) Sufficient intellectual and emotional functions to develop and fabricate dental prostheses as prescribed by the dentist.

4) Sufficient verbal and non-verbal communication skills (speech, reading, and writing), such as are needed to interact with professional personnel.

Readmission

Readmission to the DLT program is dependent upon available resources. Students will be considered for readmission if they meet current requirements for admission to the program, submit a written request to the Program Coordinator, and submit a letter of recommendation from a Dental Laboratory Technology faculty member.

Selection of Students

Selection of students for the program will be made by the president of the college or president's designee after considering the recommendation of the Admission Committee. Membership of the Admission Committee may include the Assistant Dean of the Allied Health Division, Dental Laboratory Program Coordinator, Dental Laboratory Faculty Member, Director of Admissions, and a faculty member-at-large.
