Workplace Education

Would you like to have a better performing work force AND get a tax credit for the wages paid to train them to become better performers? Sounds like a sure way to make more money, doesn’t it? These benefits to your company are possible because of just one of the programs available in Lexington and Fayette County provided by the Bluegrass Community & Technical College Adult Education program.

To get the tax credit on your Kentucky business income taxes, you provide paid time for employees without a high school diploma to work on their GED. The credit will pay you up to $1,250 per participant at the rate of 50% of the wages paid for studying. It requires a minimum of five hours per week in paid time for GED study.

If your company doesn't require a GED or already has a workforce with high school diplomas or equivalencies, there are several other “short courses” available to help you get better performance and cut costs. These programs are grouped under the heading “Workplace Essential Skills” because they are conducted at your workplace and are customized to fit your business needs. Following is a brief description of each:

  • Communications, Listening: explains the principles of active listening, why it is important in daily business, and barriers to listening; includes role play practice.
  • Communication, Speaking: use of appropriate language, preparation and organization for clarity, good diction/grammar/volume; includes a work place role play for skill building.
  • Communication, Writing: understanding the business culture and its impact on writing expectations and style, organization for clarity, acceptable grammar and spelling, use of graphs and charts; includes use of actual workplace writing documents for the training.
  • Teamwork: principles of teaming, teamwork behaviors and barriers, team roles and team decision-making; includes a team decision making meeting for skill practice.
  • Problem Solving: explanation of problem solving process and practice in doing team problem solving activity with a realistic business case.
  • ESL (English as Second Language): teaches either general life skills or workplace specific English speaking and reading.
