Operation Read

History

BuildingIn Fayette County, it is estimated that 50,000 adults, one in every five, have some difficulty with basic reading and writing. Since 1979, Operation Read has provided free one-on-one tutoring, workshops, and ongoing instructional support to adults who seek to improve their basic reading and writing skills.

Operation Read trains about 150 tutors annually and serves over 1,000 adult learners.

Operation Read tutors and other volunteers contribute thousands of volunteer hours each year to create a more literate Central Kentucky. Through direct outreach and partnerships with non-profit agencies and civic organizations, Operation Read recruits learners and volunteer tutors while raising awareness of literacy issues.

Operation Read was established as an outreach of the Lexington Public Library in 1979, thereafter functioning as an independent 501(c)(3) corporation until July 2008, when it became a part of Bluegrass Community & Technical College.  Operation Read continues to provide much needed Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) assistance, through free individual and small group tutoring, thereby promoting individual growth and a stronger community.
