As the aptly named racehorse, Kwik, crossed the wire first at Hastings Park on May 20, few of the spectators knew that this win marked an important milestone for the Bluegrass Community & Technical College’s North American Racing Academy (NARA).

Ryan Pacheco, a 2009 NARA grad, rode the Steve Henson trained Kiwk to the 1,300th victory for BCTC-NARA jockeys since the school opened in 2006.

BCTC-NARA Jockey Pathway students have ridden in 13,637 races, winning 1,315 times for earnings of $20,485,353 through May 29. Complete stats can be found at bit.ly/nara-stats.

Even though BCTC-NARA is attempting to redefine itself as a leading equine industry workforce provider, the results are a testament to the success of NARA and the work of Chris McCarron, lead Jockey Pathway instructor and Hall of Fame jockey.

Since 2006, BCTC-NARA has remained the only community college based equine industry workforce training program in the U.S., providing one-year certificate and two-year degree programs tailored to either the riding or care and training of racehorses.

“We take pride in not only preparing good solid riders, but also preparing well-rounded young men and women who will also have the skills, training and education to succeed in different aspects of the racing and breeding industries, not just riding,” McCarron said.
