Dear Student: Thank you for visiting Bluegrass Community and Technical College Nursing Program’s website for information on our associate degree program in nursing. Nursing is essential to the delivery of quality health care and its contributions are significant to the economy of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Nurses are the largest component of the health care workforce. So, you are choosing to enter a profession that is of great importance to society as well as being personally satisfying. If you are thinking of qualities that are essential for nursing, please consider the qualities that any prospective nurse should possess. Nurses must be critical thinkers who can manage a wealth of science applications as well as math applications; good at communicating both in verbally and in writing with a diverse population; physically adept at handling equipment and performing various procedures/tasks; effective managers of other staff; and importantly caring and empathetic. If you possess some of these qualities, we would like to help you develop others. The course of study to become a nurse is very demanding in this program and you should consider this carefully. While all the general education courses that support the nursing curriculum can be taken during day, evening, or weekend classes, at this time most nursing courses must be taken during the daytime hours. While many students are employed while in college, it is a very difficult challenge to work full-time while taking the clinical nursing courses. Please consider all the supportive options available to you as you plan to take the nursing curriculum. Registered nurses are very much in demand all over the country! The ten-year labor market projection suggests that this trend will continue. With increased demand, the salaries are rising all over. The Nursing 2002-2003 Alumni Survey reported that the average salary of respondents with full-time jobs was $35,787. Nursing is a rewarding profession – both an art and an applied science. We hope you are interested in this educational choice. If so, please follow carefully the admissions steps discussed in this packet. Each step is vitally important. The journey to nursing begins with these first steps. We wish you success as you pursue this educational goal! Again, we are very glad you have chosen Bluegrass Community and Technical College ! Sincerely, Heather Carlton, RN, MSN Associate Professor and Coordinator of Nursing |
