Welcome LPN Students!

Hello!  On behalf of the faculty and staff at the Bluegrass Community and Technical College Nursing Program we welcome your interest in the Associate Degree Nursing Program offered at Bluegrass Community and Technical College !  We know that you have much to offer our program in terms of your experience and education and hope that you will choose our program as you progress toward the RN licensure.

If you are an LPN who has graduated from the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, you will have 15 hours of nursing courses that will be met upon successful completion of the LPN program and licensure as an LPN.  If you review our curriculum on this website, you will note that the following courses will be met:

        Nursing 115  (9 credit hours)

Nursing 125  (2 credit hours)

Nursing 235  (4 credit hours)

You can read the entire course descriptions on the website but briefly these are the fundamentals of nursing course, the pharmacology course, and the maternal-child nursing course respectively.

If you are an LPN who has graduated from any other LPN program in this state or in any other state and hold a current, unrestricted license, you are eligible to have credit for Nursing 115
(9 credit hours). You will be able to read about this more fully in the BCTC Catalog under the heading of External Experiences.  We recognize your ability to bypass our entry-level nursing course and would seek placement for you in the second semester of the Nursing Program.

Q  When do I apply to the Nursing Program as an LPN?

An LPN can apply to the Nursing Program by meeting the February 15th deadline.  If selected, they will start in the Spring semester.  Simply follow the Admission Guidelines posted on this website.

An LPN can also apply for advanced standing.  This means that they can apply two months prior to the start of the spring semester by writing a letter to the Program Coordinator and submitting all the required transcripts and documentation.  The Nursing Admissions Committee will meet at the first of January and students, if selected, would start in January.

What if I do not want to bypass any of the Associate Degree Nursing courses and want to take all of them?

A  An LPN may take all the courses offered by meeting the entry admission requirements for the class.  You would need to apply by the February 15th deadline and follow all the requirements of any student seeking admission.

What courses “count” from my LPN background?

The general education courses that are required for the BCTC Nursing Program need to be transferable courses taught by general education faculty.

How many nursing classes do I need to take to become an RN?

If you are a graduate of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, you will need 22 hours of nursing coursework – one four credit hour class, NR 245 and two nine credit hour classes – NR 255 and NR 265.

If you are a graduate of an LPN program out of state or not from the KCTCS system, you will need 28 hours of nursing coursework.

            NR 125 – 2 credit hours
            NR 235 – 4 credit hours
            NR 245 – 4 credit hours
            NR 255 – 9 credit hours

            NR 265 – 9 credit hours
