This area is used to prepare the radiopharmaceuticals that are administered to patients
for nuclear medicine studies. The tall device (left) with the window and radiation symbols
is a lead shield which the technologist or radiopharmacist uses to reduce the radiation
exposure while working with radioactivity. Patient doses and shielded vials may be stored
behind this shield.
The low, rectangular device (right) and cylinder (center) is a dose calibrator.
Radioactivity in vials, syringes, or capsules can be placed into the cylindrical detector
to measure the amount of activity before administration to the patient. The rectangular
device displays a number which is recorded in the appropriate book located on the shelf
above (right). Federal or state regulatory agencies will inspect records periodically in
order to ensure that proper records are being kept.
