The Geiger counter is used in nuclear medicine technology primarily as a survey
instrument to test for the presence of radioactive contamination. Packages that arrive and
leave the department must be evaluated for the limits of radioactivity that may be safely
transported. Good radiation safety practice requires the use of the Geiger counter or
similar instrument to monitor objects and surfaces in the department to ensure that the
radioactivity used by the technologist is not spread to areas where it should not be. This
includes the technologist's hands and feet.Back
