This is an example of a radiation dectection device called a gamma camera. Following the administration of a radiopharmaceutical, a nuclear medicine technologist uses equipment similar to this to produce images of organs or systems in the patient's body. This instrument is sensitive to radiation (it does not emit radiation) and is capable of producing an image that represents the distribution of radioactivity in a patient. This distribution relates to the pathophysiology of the patient's condition. Back
