WHAT
IS SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION?
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is designed
to assist student learning and understanding of course material
and concepts while also improving their study skills.
|
HOW
DOES SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION WORK?
Working with the course instructor, a Supplemental
Instruction leader facilitates regularly scheduled, out-of-class,
study sessions where students from the same classes can work together,
discuss and process lecture information, and prepare for exams.
SI is not a tutoring session; rather it is a “study group”
environment where students “teach” each other. It is
the responsibility of the SI leader to keep the group on task, guide
students through best study practices, and provide instruction and
assistance as needed. Since the SI leader attends the class, he/she
has direct knowledge of the material being presented in class and
the manner in which it is being presented. The SI leader, with the
cooperation of the instructor, can also provide additional study
resources for those who attend the SI sessions. Student attendance
and participation in the SI sessions is voluntary.
