What is Engineering Technology?

Are you interested in electronics, automated machines and/or, using computers to make things happen?

If you want a job that involves electronics and computers, and want make technology to work for you, Electrical Engineering Technology is exactly what you are looking for.  Technicians in Electronics are trained to understand how electrical systems work, and how to get them to do what you want. Technicians combine engineering knowledge and methods with technical applications to solve real world problems.

Skilled Electrical Technicians are able to understand, build, test, modify, and repair electrical and electronic circuits.   They find rewarding careers in many areas including technical sales, Electronics testing, electronics design, machine controls, and manufacturing maintenance.

Career Opportunities:
If you are interested in...

Electronics Testing. The EET program will prepare you to build and test electronics and electrical systems and report your findings.  Working with prototypes, you will put systems together, make them work, and test their function.  In these careers you will also work beside design engineers and skilled tradesmen to make a design real.  Additionally, you may be called to test competitors’ products with your products, test the performance of your design, and learn how to present your findings in a professional manner.

Automation. BCTC’s Electrical Engineering program will teach you how to use electronics and electrical systems to control machines and how sensors and controls can be used to manipulate machinery.  From limit of motion to very detailed control, you will make a machine work.

Sales. Your degree in Engineering Technology will help you understand how technical products can be used in manufacturing and testing for sales purposes.  You will be able to walk into a company, communicate with designers, understand their needs and find equipment to meet these needs.  You will also have the knowledge needed to understand the strengths and limitations of your product line, and how your products compare to those of competitors.

These are just a few of the careers open to Electrical Engineering Technology graduates.  Jim Connell, one of our respected past instructors once described our program as follows: “We don't train you to do anything, we train you to think.”  This statement expresses the fact that in today's world it takes a good, solid technical background to understand how systems should work, can work and demonstrate the knowledge to do it.

About our Program:

The ET program stresses the fundamentals of electricity, electronics, computers, and instrumentation.  All of the ET classes include labs which allow you to test and apply the material covered in class.  The program takes about 2 years to complete but may take longer depending on the level of math you start with.  Because math is so important, BCTC offers any classes you may need to “bring you up to speed.”  We offer free math and English tutoring for those students who need a little extra help.
